Science Fair

For thirty-one years, FRoG has co-sponsored the Science Fair in Downers Grove with School District 58. Nearly 600 students participate in the event every year.

Location: O'Neill Middle School

The Science Fair will be held at O'Neill Middle School, located at 635 59th Street in Downers Grove. This is the same location as in previous years.

Date: Saturday, January 21, 2012

The judging of the Science Fair exhibits will be on the morning of Saturday, January 21, 2012. Student exhibit setup will be done on Friday evening, January 20. Major differences initiated last year compared to previous years: Parents will register their children for the event through the District 58 website and there will be two judging times on Saturday morning (8:30 a.m. for grades 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9:30 a.m. for grades 3, 4, 5).

Science Fair Schedule

Friday 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Students set up experiments.
Saturday 8:15 - 8:30 a.m. Students in grades 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 arrive at their experiments.
Parents may accompany students to their experiments, but must leave the judging area by 8:30.
Saturday 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Projects in grades 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 will be judged.
Students remain at experiments until visited by the judges.
Saturday 9:15 - 9:30 a.m. Students in grades 3, 4, 5 arrive at their experiments.
Parents may accompany students to their experiments, but must leave the judging area by 9:30.
Saturday 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Projects in grades 3, 4, 5 will be judged.
Students remain at experiments until visited by the judges.
Saturday 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Exhibit is open to the public.
Saturday 11:30 - 12:30 p.m. Students will remove projects.

Workshop for Students and Parents

A workshop is available for students in grades 1 through 6 and their parents. Information will be presented about selecting appropriate projects, procedures for doing experiments, and instructions for completing projects. Display boards and science project folders will be sold at $3.00 and $2.00, respectively. Students in the 7th and 8th grades and their parents are welcome at these workshops, but their additional registration procedures will not be discussed. The middle school science teachers will provide the additional information needed for these students.

If that registration date is missed, then please contact your school's principal to get registered. The on-line registration form, as well as, ideas for science fair projects are available on the District 58 Science Fair Web site. Home schooled and private schooled children in District 58 who are interested in participating in the science fair should send an e-mail) for further instructions.

Parking

On Saturday morning, there will be parking available at O'Neill, especially on the south side of the building. There is an additional large parking lot behind Fairmount School, 6036 Blodgett, which backs up to O'Neill's parking lot and playground. Please do not park at the YMCA because it is also busy with many activities that day.
